If you’d like a future in network support then the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator course would be right for you. Whether you’re about to get into IT or already have knowledge but need to formalise your skills, there’s a range of courses to fit either requirement. Find a training provider that’s keen to understand you, and can help you work out the best route for you, prior to any discussions about the relevant training. Experts will also be able to advise you where to commence dependent on your present knowledge and or lack of understanding.
How are we supposed to make an educated decision then? With such prospects, we’ll need to know where to be looking – and what it is we should be searching for.
A so-called advisor who doesn’t dig around with lots of question – chances are they’re really a salesperson. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before getting to know your background and current experience level, then it’s very likely to be the case. Of course, if you’ve had any relevant work-experience or certification, then you may be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to a student who’s starting from scratch. Starting with a basic PC skills module first may be the ideal way to commence your computer programme, depending on your skill level at the moment.
Some training companies only give support available from 9-6 (office hours) and sometimes later on specific days; most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Try and find training where you can access help at any time of day or night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) You want direct access to tutors, and not simply some messaging service that means you’re consistently being held in a queue for a call-back when it’s convenient for them.
Keep your eyes open for colleges that use several support centres across multiple time-zones. These should be integrated to offer a simple interface and access round-the-clock, when you need it, with the minimum of hassle. Unless you insist on direct-access round-the-clock support, you’ll regret it. You may avoid using the support late at night, but you’re bound to use weekends, evenings and early mornings at some point.
The old fashioned style of teaching, using textbooks and whiteboards, can be pretty hard going sometimes. If you’re nodding as you read this, find training programs that are on-screen and interactive. Studies in learning psychology have shown that much more of what we learn in remembered when all our senses are involved, and we put into practice what we’ve been studying.
Interactive full motion video utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s will beat books every time. And they’re a lot more fun to do. It’s wise to view some of the typical study materials provided before you make your decision. Always insist on instructor-led video demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.
Some companies only have access to training that is purely available online; and although this is okay the majority of the time, consider what happens when you don’t have access to the internet or you get slow speeds and down-time etc. A safer solution is the provision of physical CD or DVD discs that don’t suffer from these broadband issues.
Considering how a program is ‘delivered’ to you is usually ignored by most students. In what way are your training elements sectioned? What is the specific order and what control do you have at what pace it arrives? By and large, you will join a program staged over 2 or 3 years and receive a module at a time. This may seem sensible until you think about these factors: Sometimes the steps or stages offered by the provider doesn’t suit. And what if you don’t finish each and every section at the speed required?
The very best situation would see you getting all the learning modules packed off to you immediately; the entire thing! This prevents any future issues from rising that will affect your ability to finish.
A subtle way that colleges make a big mark-up is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and then including an ‘Exam Guarantee’. It looks impressive, but let’s just examine it more closely:
Everyone knows they’re ultimately paying for it – obviously it has been added into the gross price invoiced by the training company. Certainly, it’s not a freebie – don’t think these companies are so generous with their money! Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Taking your exams progressively one at a time and paying as you go sees you much better placed to get through first time – you take it seriously and are mindful of the investment you’ve made.
Isn’t it in your interests to find the best exam deal or offer when you take the exam, instead of paying a premium to the college, and to do it in a local testing office – rather than possibly hours away from your area? A surprising number of current training colleges net a great deal of profit through getting paid for all the exam fees up-front then hoping that you won’t take them all. In addition to this, you should consider what an ‘exam guarantee’ really means. The majority of companies won’t be prepared to pay again for an exam until you’re able to demonstrate an excellent mock pass rate.
Spending hundreds or even thousands extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is foolish – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will get you through.
Many trainers supply a practical Job Placement Assistance facility, to assist your search for your first position. It can happen though that too much is made of this feature, for it’s really not that difficult for well qualified and focused men and women to secure a job in IT – as there is such a shortage of well trained people.
However, don’t procrastinate and wait until you have qualified before getting your CV updated. Right at the beginning of your training, list what you’re working on and tell people about it! Being considered a ‘maybe’ is better than being rejected. A decent number of junior support jobs are bagged by trainees in the early stages of their course. If it’s important to you to find work near your home, then it’s quite likely that an independent and specialised local employment service might serve you better than some national concern, due to the fact that they’re far more likely to know the jobs that are going locally.
Do make sure you don’t conscientiously work through your course materials, and then just stop and imagine someone else is miraculously going to sort out your employment. Stand up for yourself and start looking for yourself. Invest as much time and energy into landing your new role as it took to get qualified.
Doing your bit in progressive developments in new technology gives you the best job satisfaction ever. You become one of a team of people creating a future for us all. It’s a common misapprehension that the revolution in technology we have experienced is cooling down. This couldn’t be more wrong. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet significantly will be the biggest thing to affect the way we live.
Should receiving a good salary be around the top on your list of priorities, you will appreciate the fact that the average salary for the majority of IT staff is a lot better than salaries in most other jobs or industries. It would appear there is not a hint of a downturn for IT industry growth across Britain. The market sector continues to grow enormously, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s not showing any signs that there’ll be any kind of easing off for years to come.
