Blackspots on Streetview

It could be quite ‘interesting’ for residents to show newcomers to the area what Walthamstow Forest (or other London borough) is really (well reasonably bar airbrushing), like by photographing crashed cars (with a bit of the surroundings) at blackspots on certain streets (with the date and times).

Boris keeps ranting on about how great Streetview is, and yes it is, it will actually show people what a place is really like, not what the Council, Tfl and estate agents lead people, ie suckers, to believe. Let’s see the dead or live rats, old mattresses, rubbish, graffiti and stuff falling off council houses.

People should also see the ‘great cycling facilities’ London is supposed to have. They can also how much of the Cycling Superhighway has started.. or rather has not started at Aldgate.

I think Streetview should be added to all Council Websites and any website where people want to know ‘the truth’.

I particularly like the comments section you can put by the photographs :-)

I have been on it for a short time and already have seen lots of congestion and rubbish. Yes, tourists may want to visit another country instead. Who wants to be run over or gassed with toxic air or even deafened? Who wants to see filthy buildings when they should be white?

Maybe Streetview is a way of getting the Councils to face their responsibilities (and some of the residents for that matter). Maybe London will improve.. who knows?

One of the benefits of Streetview is to see how congested a place is and try and cycle along better, perhaps more picturesque cycling routes.

Adobe Web Design Course Providers – What Should I Look For 2009

Adobe Dreamweaver is the starting point of study for almost all web designers. It’s reputed to be the favourite environment for web development on the planet. The entire Adobe Web Creative Suite ought also to be understood in detail. This will introduce you to Action Script and Flash, (and more), and could lead on to the ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) or ACP (Adobe Certified Professional) accreditation.

Constructing the website is merely a fraction of what you’ll need – in order to create traffic, maintain its content, and work on dynamic sites that are database driven, you’ll be required to have additional programming skills, namely ones like PHP, HTML, and MySQL. You should also have an excellent grasp of E-Commerce and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

Bearing in mind all this debate about computer technology nowadays, how do we appreciate what in particular to look for?

A competent and specialised advisor (as opposed to a salesman) will ask questions and seek to comprehend your current situation. This is useful for working out the point at which you need to start your studies. Often, the level to start at for a person with a little experience can be massively dissimilar to someone just starting out. If this is your first attempt at IT study then you may want to start with a user-skills course first.

One thing you must always insist on is full 24×7 support from dedicated instructors and mentors. Too many companies will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend. Avoid those companies which use ‘out-of-hours’ messaging systems – with the call-back coming in during normal office hours. It’s no use when you’re stuck on a problem and need help now.

World-class organisations offer an internet-based round-the-clock facility involving many support centres across the globe. You get a simple environment which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres irrespective of the time of day: Support on demand. If you fail to get yourself support round-the-clock, you’ll very quickly realise that you’ve made a mistake. You may not need it during the night, but consider weekends, evenings and early mornings at some point.

It’s likely that you probably enjoy fairly practical work – a ‘hands-on’ type. Usually, the painful task of reading endless manuals is something you’ll make yourself do if you have to, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if you’d really rather not use books. Studies have always demonstrated that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Interactive full motion video utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s beat books hands-down. And they’re far more fun. Don’t take any chances and look at examples of the courseware provided before you sign the purchase order. You should expect instructor-led video demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.

Opt for actual CD or DVD ROM’s whenever you can. You can then avoid all the difficulties of broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.

In first place for the most common difficulty for IT trainees is a requirement to attend multiple workshop days. Most certification companies extol the virtues of the ‘benefits’ of going in to their classes, however, they quickly become a growing difficulty due to:

* Frequent round trips – usually hundreds of miles at a time.

* If, like many of us, you work, then Monday to Friday events cause problems at work. You’re usually contending with two or three days together to make it worse.

* And don’t overlook the lost holiday days. Most of us have twenty days annual leave. If half is given up to classes, then it doesn’t leave much for us and our families.

* Workshop days can fill up very quickly and will likely end up bigger than you’d hoped.

* Many attendees are trying to maintain a quick pace, while others are looking to take a more ’steady’ pace and not be forced to adopt an uncomfortable speed for them. This causes difficulty and tension in most workshops.

* And don’t forget the extra expense of arranging transport or several days accommodation either. This can run to many hundreds of pounds more – sometimes thousands. Sit down and add it up – you may be surprised.

* Keeping your training private from your employer can be very important to many attendees. Why give up potential advancement, salary hikes or success at work because you’re getting trained in a different area. If your employer knows you’re taking steps towards training in another sector, what will they think?

* Asking questions in the presence of other class-mates sometimes makes us feel awkward. Surely, at some point, you’ve avoided asking a question just because you honestly thought you might seem thick?

* When your work takes you away from home, you face the added difficulty that classes sometimes become impossible to get to – but unfortunately, they’ve already been paid for.

It would be better to just watch and gain knowledge from tutors one-on-one through ready-made modules, studying them at your convenience – not somebody else’s. You can train wherever you want. If you own a laptop, you could get a bit of sun outside while you learn. Any problems and utilise the 24×7 Support. It really doesn’t matter how regularly you feel you need to repeat something, on-screen instructors will never get annoyed or frustrated! And don’t forget, because of this, you’ll never have to write notes again. It’s already there for you. Could it be simpler: You avoid travelling and wasting time and money; and you get a more relaxed study atmosphere.

Locating job security these days is very unusual. Businesses can remove us out of the workplace with very little notice – as and when it suits them. We can however locate security at market-level, by searching for areas of high demand, together with work-skill shortages.

A rather worrying UK e-Skills investigation brought to light that 26 percent of all available IT positions remain unfilled as an upshot of an appallingly low number of appropriately certified professionals. Put directly, we only have the national capacity to fill just three out of each four job positions in the computer industry. This troubling certainty clearly demonstrates the urgent need for more appropriately certified IT professionals across the UK. Undoubtedly, it really is such a perfect time to consider retraining into Information Technology (IT).

Choosing An MCSE Course in 2009

Does an MCSE appeal to you? It’s very possible then that you’re in one of two situations: You could already be in IT and you’d like to gain accreditation with a qualification such as MCSE. Or this could be your first step into the computer world, but it’s apparent to you there is a great need for those with appropriate certifications.

When looking into training colleges, be sure to avoid those that short-change you by failing to use the current Microsoft version. Such institutions will hold back the trainee their knowledge will be of the wrong MCSE version which isn’t in line with the current exam syllabus, so they’ll probably fail. Don’t get bullied into a training program without a proper consultation. Set your sights on finding a training company who will make sure that you’re on the most suitable training path for you.

The world of information technology is one of the more exciting and ground-breaking industries to be involved in today. To be dealing with leading-edge technology means you’re a part of the huge progress affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. Many people are of the opinion that the increase in technology we have experienced is slowing down. Nothing could be further from the truth. Terrific advances are ahead of us, and the internet particularly will be the biggest thing to affect the way we live.

And don’t forget that on average, the income of a person in the IT industry in the United Kingdom is significantly better than in the rest of the economy, so you will probably gain a lot more once qualified in IT, than you’d expect to earn elsewhere. Experts agree that there’s a considerable nationwide demand for professionally qualified IT workers. And as the industry constantly develops, it appears this pattern will continue for the significant future.

What are the questions we need to pose if we want to arrive at the understanding required? As it’s evident there are many fairly incomparable possibilities for everyone to mull over.

If your advisor doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s likely they’re actually nothing more than a salesman. If they push a particular product before getting to know your background and current experience level, then you know it’s true. Sometimes, the level to start at for a person with some experience is often vastly dissimilar to someone without. Starting with a foundation course first may be the ideal way to get into your IT programme, but depends on your skill level.

Traditional teaching in classrooms, with books and manuals, is usually pretty hard going. If you’re nodding as you read this, dig around for more practical courses which feature interactive and multimedia modules. Learning psychology studies show that much more of what we learn in remembered when we use all our senses, and we take action to use what we’ve learned.

Find a course where you’ll receive a selection of DVD-ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, and be able to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions. Always insist on a demonstration of the study materials from any training college. You’ll want to see expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Choose actual CD or DVD ROM’s if possible. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be comprehensive 24×7 direct-access support through expert mentors and instructors. Far too often we see trainers who only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends. Locate training schools with help available at any time you choose (even 1am on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get direct access to tutors, and not simply some messaging service that means you’re waiting for tutors to call you back during office hours.

Be on the lookout for training programs that use several support centres from around the world. Every one of them needs to be seamlessly combined to enable simple one-stop access and also 24 hours-a-day access, when you want it, with no hassle. Never settle for anything less. Direct-access round-the-clock support is really your only option when it comes to computer-based study. Maybe late-evening study is not your thing; but for most of us, we’re working during the provided support period.

Always expect the current Microsoft (or any other key organisation’s) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages. Often students can get thrown by practising exam questions that are not from official sources. It’s not uncommon that the question formats and phraseology can be quite different and you should be prepared for this. You should make sure you test your knowledge through tests and mock ups of exams to prepare you for taking the actual exam.

OK, why might we choose commercial certification and not the usual academic qualifications taught at tech’ colleges and universities? The IT sector now acknowledges that to cover the necessary commercial skill-sets, certified accreditation from companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA is far more effective and specialised – for much less time and money. This is done by honing in on the skills that are really needed (together with a proportionate degree of background knowledge,) instead of going into the heightened depths of background ‘padding’ that computer Science Degrees can often find themselves doing – to fill a three or four year course.

Just like the advert used to say: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. Employers simply need to know what they’re looking for, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Be careful that the certifications that you’re considering will be recognised by employers and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ certificates are not normally useful in gaining employment. Unless the accreditation comes from a major player like Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco, then you’ll probably find it will have been a waste of time – as no-one will have heard of it.

Long Distance Rides

alpsPhotography by Ben Ingham  www.beningham.net

A question that everyone seems to have a different opinion on is “how long should my longest rides be?”

Endurance is the most difficult component of your training to develop because of the long hours it requires to be on the bike.  However, once you build your endurance it’s the easiest system to maintain.  This is why athletes who periodize their training focus on endurance first and use it as their foundation thereafter.  This actually follows quite a natural progression and most of us do this regardless of intentionally periodizing our training or not.   Periodized training is not necessarily defined by intensity and volume.  A better definition would be “specificity”. The closer you get to an event, the more specific your training needs to become. If you make the training less like the event the closer you get to it, the more likely you’ll be disappointed in poor performance.  Joe Friel said this, not me. He is the man.

The general consensus among coaches states that your longest mileage day should be the time that your longest race or event will take you.   Don’t worry about the distance as much unless you’re training for a time trial (which would amount to the same thing anyway).  This is of course something you may have to work up to.   This is usually a Saturday ride for most of us, but keep Sunday open as a backup for bad weather or unexpected circumstances.  There should also be an additional long distance recovery day during the training week.   These are easy to neglect but are very important.

If you are training for a race like the Melbourne to Warrnambool (299km) it is unrealistic to do that distance of ride.  This is a good example of why you should be looking at the amount of time that the ride will take you instead of the actual distance.  It would take me 12 hrs of lonely suffering to do 299km, but in the race itself it only takes 7hrs.  Yeah….only 7hrs at 41km/hr.

Risk vs reward is something else that should be considered.  Is it really worth backing up 7hr training rides over a long period of time?  There is a high risk that you’ll wear yourself down,  get sick, and not be able to ride at all.   Especially since the long rides are generally done early in the season when the weather is the worst (unless you’re smart and live in Queensland).  You have to ask yourself if the reward is worth the risk of overdoing it and getting sick. Would backing off the length of these long rides  still suffice and ensure the consistency of your training?  This is a very individual question that depends on how long of an event you’re training for and your personal tolerances.

Like I said earlier, these long rides shouldn’t be done right up until the targeted event.  You should taper off those maintenance mileage rides a few weeks before the event.  Intensity will increase, volume will decrease.   A short and sweet article on some basic training assumptions can be found here.

Classic Obsessions

coppi1I’m not an old man yet nor am I ready to concede to Masters racing, however thoughts are beginning to enter my head that are consistent with the older generation.  I’m starting to acquire a taste for very expensive cycling products that have that “classic” touch to them (not to mention an expensive price tag).  I have Velodramatic to thank for this.  I’m not sure how I stumbled on this blog, but once I did I find myself going back every day to see if an update has been posted.  Not only is the site layout clean, simple and elegant, but his appreciation for high end clothing, bikes, casual wear with that touch of class is starting to wear on me.   A very tangible image of how I will look as a cyclist in 10yrs from now is beginning to take shape in my head thanks to this influence.  For now, you may see me with just a touch of this classic styling.  Perhaps I’ll ease into it with a Rahpa winter jersey, then some brown leather bar-tape, then I’ll mortgage my house and get some lightweight wheels, etc.  I can’t dive into it all at once.  I still feel the need for my Zipp wheels, loud and obnoxious sunglasses, and sponsors logos in every free space.

Here are a few of my current obsessions with that classic feel:
